The town of Lunenburg: A Discovery
The town of Lunenburg: A Discovery Established in 1753, Lunenburg was one of the first British Colonial settlements in Nova Scotia. Promises of land drove Europeans to withstand difficult sea voyages and overwhelming challenges of clearing, planting, building and simply surviving. These early days are still evident in a number of homes and churches, in the grid-like layout of the streets and the garden lots. 18th century Capes and later Victorian and Italianate-styled "painted ladies" still stand to this day, and are protected by UNESCO's World Heritage Organization.
Be enchanted by the sights and sounds of this beautiful seaside town. Take a horse and buggy ride or a whale watching tour. Check out the Fisheries Museum and memorials to brave fishermen of the past. Walk to the Smith and Rhuland's shipyard where the Bluenose, the Bluenose ll, and the HMS Bounty were built. Yes, there is art, shopping, dining and history - some of the best in North America - but there's something else. And do not leave without visiting St. John's Anglican Church - the second oldest in North America.
Once here, your heart will never be the same.
